How to Overcome Unemployment

This is the speech that I delivered when following English Speech Contest in 2012 East Jakarta city level , titled "How to Overcome unemployment" Actually they've given choice of themes for speeches. Then I made ​​this speech alone and take references from several blogs and news. And FYI with this speech I won English Speech Contest, won # 1st place and money worth Rp 1.900.000

Assalamualaikum wr.wb

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. The honorable juries and all audience that I respect. Firstly, I would like to introduce myself my name is Winda Nurafiani representative from Tunas Medika Vocational high school.

Thanks for the opportunity that given to me, to deliver my English speech. It is a great honor for me to stand here and give my brief speech entitled “How to Overcome Unemployment”

Ladies and gentlemen

Unemployment is one of complicated problems in our country Indonesia. According to data by The National Planning Agency in 2009, there are 4.1 million people are unemployed from 21.2 million people who entered the labor force. And the number keeps growing every year.  In fact, unemployment rate dominated by diplomas and university graduates. How could this happen?

I am sure there was an error of planning in shaping the national human resource, beside that the amount of labor is not proportional with the number of jobs.

If it’s allowed to continue, then certainly it would give negative impacts such as increase the poverty rate, increase the criminal action, and many more. So what can be done to overcome unemployment?

Ladies and gentlemen I would like to describe some ways to overcome unemployment

Free education for underprivileged

One cause unemployment is the low level of education. Many people in Indonesia cannot continue their study to pursue higher education, because they cannot afford that. So they don't have enough knowledge and skills and cannot compete with the people who are well educated.

But in fact, the unemployment dominated by diplomas and university graduates who are well educated, it means even if we are graduates who are well educated, it’s not a guarantee for us easy to get job.
Why? Education institutions in Indonesia have not completed ‘the labor that ready to work’ but they more to complete ‘the labor that ready to think’ with the theory that they have, but not accompanied by its application in the world of work, it would be useless because the skills that they have not been enough to entered the world of work. So the government should change the methods in teaching and learning system.

The government should provide more jobs, not only the government the society was required to be able to create jobs for others. How? Entrepreneurial is the right solution

Establish institutions to provide loan capital for the people who are lack of capital, so it could help them in establish their business

Establish the vocational training places, such as sewing, making crafts, and many more. By that way, people who are not well educated could work with the skills that they have.
 Then, for the students that still in school should be given non formal education, so they have skills as capital to enter the world of work. And they should be directed to be the graduates who are able to create jobs, not only can apply for a job.
But, to overcome unemployment is not so easy, it is required a dynamic cooperation among the government, private, and society. If its goes well, I am sure the efforts to reduce the unemployment rate, would be done effective.

So that’s all from me, I hope my brief speech would be useless for us. I apologize if there are some wrong words in my speech. Thank you very much for your attention.
